Essential Oil Recipes
The growing number of essential oils on the market can be a bit daunting at first. With so many of the oils having such an enormous range of therapeutic properties, it is not always easy to know which ones to use for which purpose, leave alone trying to work out the most effective blend of two or more oils.
Whether you are new to essential oils or you have been using them for some time and just looking for some inspiration, we have gathered a number of wonderful essential recipes for you to try out at home.
Diffuser recipes
If you have an essential oil diffuser at home, we have a number of excellent recipes that can be used for different health purposes as well as making your home or office smell more welcoming and fresh. Remember that these recipes are just a guide and you might be restricted by availability or budget so try out a few recipes and hopefully you will hit upon the perfect blend yourself.
1. Essential oil recipes for stress and anxiety
There are many individual essential oils that can help you to deal with those unwanted feelings of stress and anxiety perhaps most notably lavender oil. However, why not try making your own blend based on the following effective stress relieving recipes.

A great way to relax and take the edge away is to combine 4 drops of lavender with 4 of Roman Chamomile essential oil and 2 each of Clary sage and geranium essential oils. - Stress busting blend 2
An alternative recipe to help you relax and down is to combine 4 drops of lavender essential oil with 2 drops each of orange and Cedarwood essential oils and a single drop of Ylang Ylang.
2. Essential oil recipes for Sleep and relaxation
If you suffer from insomnia or have trouble winding down at night, then these are some excellent recipes that you can try to get your sleep patterns back in a healthy groove.
- Sleep recipe 1
Try a combination of 5 drops of bergamot and an equal amount of grapefruit and lime. Add 4 drops of ginger and 2 of sandalwood. - Sleep recipe 2
Alternatively you can use 4 drops of lavender and 2 each of orange and marjoram. Add 2 drops of either German or Roman chamomile.
3. Essential oil recipes for Energy
If you are feeling fatigued and you could do with an injection of energy, there are plenty of wonderful essential oil recipes you can try and these are some of the best:
- Energizing recipe 1
Simply blend 4 drops of peppermint with 4 drops of orange and diffuse. - Energizing recipe 2
Another excellent energizing blend for your diffuser is to mix 6 drops of grapefruit with 4 drops of lemon and 2 drops of basil essential oil.
Whether you are at home or you need some office stimulation, these recipes will refresh your mind and your body and help get you through the day.
4. Essential oil recipes for Sensuality
If you need to get in the mood for love, there are several blends that will put you in the right frame of mind for a romantic evening…even if you have been married for a very long time.
Sensuality recipe
Jasmine, sandalwood and Ylang Ylang essential oils are known for their aphrodisiac qualities
Try this recipe to get you and your partner in the mood:
- Mix 8 drops of sandalwood
- 2 drops of jasmine and a drop of Ylang Ylang oil and diffuse in your bedroom.
5. Insect repellant recipes
Keeping the bugs at bay is a bit of a preoccupation for me in an area where we get overrun by mosquitos looking for a feed. To keep those pesky bugs away try to diffuse this blend.

All you need to do is combine 2 drops of sandalwood with a drop each of lemongrass, eucalyptus and rosemary oil. You can also throw in a drop of thyme essential oil for good measure. Another great oil for repelling mosquito’s in particular is Lemon-Eucalyptus oil (Eucalyptus citriodora). Not to be confused with Lemon or “regular” Eucalyptus—it is a type of eucalyptus that has been shown to be as effective as DEET against mosquitos. It is also the only plant based ingredient recommended by the CDC (1)
6. Recipes to boost your immunity
At certain times of year and after an illness of any kind, your immune system could probably do with a lift and many essential oils are known for their immune boosting abilities.
- Immune boosting recipe 1
If you are coming down with a cold or influenza, try diffusing the following recipe to get you back on the healthy track.Combine 1 or 2 drops of lemon, peppermint, lime, eucalyptus and rosemary essential oil and diffuse it throughout the day and during the night. - Immune boosting recipe 2
An alternative blend to combat your cold is to combine 4 drops of orange, and 2 each of eucalyptus, basil and rosewood with a drop or 2 of ginger essential oil.
7. For focus and clarity
If you are studying for some important examinations or you simply feel your mind needs a clear out, try one of these effective blends and with any luck your focus will return in spades.

A combination of marjoram, peppermint, rosemary and lemon essential oil in equal parts can help improve your awareness and get you on the front foot when your focus seems to be slipping. - Essential oil focus recipe 2
You could also try a combination of peppermint, lemon and wild orange in equal combinations.
Massage recipes
1. Massage recipes for digestive health
There are a number of recipes that you can try to aid with any digestive complaints that you may be suffering from. We have listed some of the very best here:
Recipe
- Combine 3 drops of ginger essential oil with an equal amount of cardamom.
- Add 6 drops of bergamot oil and 6 drops of frankincense.
- Make sure that you dilute these essential oils with an adequate amount of carrier oil.
- For a carrier oil, you can choose between jojoba, sweet almond and grape seed oil.
2. Pain relief massage recipes
You might be suffering from a chronic condition like rheumatism or you may be an athlete with a pulled muscle or you might simply be feeling the aches and pains that we all start to feel as we get older. Whatever your reason for joint and muscular aches, these recipes should prove an excellent tonic.
Pain relief recipe 1
This wonderful blend of oils will not only ease your aches and pains but it will also improve your mood and calm your mind.
- Add 3 drops of bergamot oil to 6 drops of lavender essential oil
- 6 drops of myrrh and 4 drops of German chamomile oil
- Make sure that you combine it with a carrier oil such as jijoba, coconut or sweet almond oil to make the perfect relaxing blend.
Pain relief recipe 2
An alternative pain relief recipe involves combining sandalwood, neroli, lemon and Roman chamomile essential oils.
- Mix 3 drops of Roman chamomile with an equal amount of sandalwood oil
- Add 2 drops each of lemon and neroli oil and then mix well with the carrier oil of your choice.
Calming Bath Recipe
There is any number of combinations that you can use in the bath to relax after a busy and stressful day but one of the best I have tried is the following recipe.
- Fill your bath with hot water and then add 3 drops of neroli oil
- 2 drops of frankincense and 2 drops of lavender but make sure the bathwater has finished running before adding your oils.
- Add a cupful of Epsom salts to the mixture if you have any then lay back and let the water and the oily goodness wash over you.
