What is hyperhidrosis?
Sweating is an important natural process that regulates the body’s temperature and helps eliminate harmful toxins. Unfortunately, for some people, this process is unbalanced causing them to sweat excessively.
This condition is known medically as hyperhidrosis and it can have a terrible impact on people’s quality of life. Sweating excessively can cause a number of problems beyond the physical discomfort with many sufferers feeling embarrassed and anxious about the condition.
Hyperhidrosis causes excessive sweating all over the body but most commonly occurs on the palms of the hands, the soles of the feet and in the armpits.
Possible causes
Some people are simply prone to sweating more than others but hyperhidrosis can be caused by a number of factors and it is important to speak to your doctor if you are concerned about any underlying cause. Factors that might cause excessive sweating include:
• Obesity or being overweight
• Emotional disorders like anxiety or depression
• Diabetes
• Excessive alcohol consumption
• Cardiovascular disease
• Certain medications
• Hormonal changes
• Pregnancy
• Menopause
• Gout
• Hyperthyroidism
Home remedies for hyperhidrosis
If you are unlucky enough to be suffering from hyperhidrosis to the extent that it is interfering with the quality of your life, there is no need to worry. There are plenty of natural and safe remedies that have proven very effective that you can use conveniently at home. Many of these remedies make use of products that most of us already have in our homes while others are inexpensive and easy enough to get hold of.
1. Cornstarch
Cornstarch makes for an excellent remedy whenever you feel yourself sweating profusely. It is easy enough to carry it around with you making it an extremely convenient treatment option. To give your cornstarch an added fragrant twist, just add a little talcum powder to your cornstarch and whenever necessary, just apply it to the areas where you perspire most profusely.
Before putting the cornstarch on your body, it is best to remove any excess sweat with some tissue paper to prevent the cornstarch from clumping on your skin. Feel free to add a generous amount of cornstarch under the armpits and to the soles of the feet in order to keep them dry.
2. Herbal teas
Regularly drinking herbal teas can prevent you from sweating excessively with the added bonus that they are very good for your health. Among the most effective herbal teas for hyperhidrosis is sage tea. Sage tea is especially rich in Vitamin B and magnesium, which help reduce over activity in the sweat glands.
Sage tea is said to be especially effective in preventing underarm sweat but it works well for the entire body. If you do not have sage herbs handy, then green tea makes for an excellent alternative. Green tea is also full of vital antioxidants that help protect the body from a number of conditions.
3. Black tea
If herbal teas are not really your thing, ordinary black tea is also an effective remedy for hyperhidrosis. Black tea is rich in tannins, which have astringent qualities. When the tea is spread over the skin, these tannins take hold on the skin’s surface by blocking the pores and preventing excess sweat from seeping out.
Another benefit of this remedy is that the tannin actually helps cool down the body reducing the body’s need to sweat. If you do not want to rub tea all over your skin, you can use the teabags instead. Just cool the used teabags in your fridge for a few hours and use the bags to apply the tea to your skin whenever necessary.
4. Potato
While most people are happy enough to eat them, the idea of putting potatoes under your arms or under your breasts might not be so appealing. Before dismissing the idea however, it is worth noting that potato slices are an extremely effect method of combatting excess perspiration.
Potatoes absorb fluids very effectively and as long as you are willing to give them a chance, they can help absorb the excess sweat from your skin. Simply cut a decent sixed potato into slices and rub them over the areas of your body where you are experiencing excessive amounts of sweat. For extra protection, you can apply the cornstarch remedy after the potatoes have done their part.
5. Apple cider vinegar
If you do not have a bottle of apple cider vinegar in the kitchen, I recommend that you get one as soon as possible. Apple cider vinegar is full of healthful benefits that can help treat a range of complaints from skin conditions to obesity.
Apple cider vinegar also has natural astringent properties that help with excessive sweating. You can apply apple cider vinegar directly to the skin but unfortunately, not everybody will appreciate your new scent so it is recommended that you consume it internally instead.
Not only will a few teaspoons of apple cider vinegar each day reduce your sweat production but you will benefit from its range of other health benefits too. Apple cider vinegar might even enhance the body’s metabolism helping you lose weight and burn fat which is especially beneficial to those whose hyperhidrosis is caused by obesity.
6. Witch hazel
Witch hazel is a popular traditional remedy and a natural astringent which contains tannins, catechins and flavonoids. It can block the sweat ducts and bring relief from excessive sweating all over the body. It can be safely applied to all the areas of the body prone to excessive sweat. Witch hazel is considered to be especially effective in treating facial perspiration and is an ingredient in many creams, ointments and lotions.
7. Baking soda with lemon
This is a very effective remedy for those of you experiencing hyperhidrosis. The baking soda works to keep your body nice and dry while the fresh lemon help eliminate bacteria and keeps you smelling nice and fresh.
All you need to do is squeeze the juice out of a fresh lemon into some baking soda and mix it up into a smooth paste. Simply apply this paste to the areas where you sweat most profusely. An alternative method is to slice up a lemon and add a sprinkling of baking soda to the slice and rub the slice into the same areas. Either way, your body will stay dry and smell great.
8. Tea tree oil
Tea tree essential oil is one of the most popular essential oils because of its wide range of therapeutic benefits. When it comes to hyperhidrosis, tea tree oil is especially effective because of its natural astringent and antifungal properties that can prevent excessive sweating as well as protecting against the fungal infections caused by too much moisture.
If you are unfamiliar with essential oils, it is important to note that they should never be applied to the skin undiluted. Before you put it onto your skin, make sure that you dilute a few drops in some carrier oil or water and even then test your skin’s reaction by doing a spot test on a small patch of your skin. Once you are happy with your dilution, use a cotton ball to rub the oil and water into the necessary areas of your body. You can safely repeat this process whenever you feel the need.
9. Salt
A very cheap and convenient solution to the condition is to use salt. Salt has as excellent ability to absorb liquid and can help dry the skin and retain its dryness. Salt crystals are more effective and easier to use than powdered salt; they will help absorb any excess sweat and block your pores.
Simply take a handful of salt crystals and rub them into the areas of the body most prone to perspiration. Salt is cheap, easy to carry around with you and is also odorless so you will not suffer from any unwanted smells.
All of these remedies are natural, safe and relatively inexpensive. If you suffer from hyperhidrosis and you are planning to try one or more of these remedies, good luck and please let us know how you got on.
